As I recall, the Belbet smexing occurs in both the Evan and Shion endings, and both of those happen when you: Sit with Jose and Prepare the Tools First, so any path you follow where those two conditions are met will have it. It happens before the first trial, and I believe it will happen regardless of your choise to open the box or envelope first.
